Teaching Thursdays: Create This Playful Octopus

With summer here, I always love to go to beach every year. When I go to the beach I think of all the wonderful sea creatures that are apart of the ocean. One animal that has always been so fascinating to me is the, Octopus. This sea animal is amazing. Can you imagine having eight legs? I know at first it might be weird, but imagine how much more you could get done in the day. One of our very talented designers, Sherrie Ragsdale created this wonderful fun summertime craft. This cute octopus is sure to be a hit with the kids. This is a beginner level craft, and should take about 2 hours to complete. This would be great to make while at a summer camp. Enjoy!

Equipment Needed: Apple Barrel Paints - 20251 Pink Parfait, 20504 Black, 20503 White, Stencil Decor - 1533 Plaid 3/4" spouncer, 3/4" flat brush, Liner brush or Extra fine black permanent marker, Four pink 12" pipe cleaners, Goose egg, Eight 5/8" x 3/4" wooden spools, Sixteen 1/2" x 1/2" wooden spools, Sixteen 1/2" x 3/8" wooden spools, Forty 5/16" round beads, Glue, 3/8" black and white gingham ribbon, Pencil

Instructions:

1.  Paint all the wooden spools, egg and round bead without Pink Parfait, allow to dry.

2. Take the four pipe cleaners and twist them together in the middle. Add to each end of pipe cleaners, one 5/8" spool, bead, 1/2" x 1/2" spool, bead, 1/2" x 1/2" spool, bead, 1/2" x 3/8" spool, bead, 1/2" x 3/8" spool and finally the last bead. Curl up each end of pipe cleaners.

3.  Glue the egg to the center of legs.

4.  Add the eyes with the 3/4" spouncer dipped in White and then the Black center with the end of the spouncer dipped in black.

5.  Draw a smile on with the pencil and then go over with the liner brush or use a extra fine black permanent marker.

6. If you would like to dress up your octopus a little bit more, then try adding a little scrap of fabric to tie around his neck.
