 spookybottles.jpg

LabelTime.gif PrjTime_1.gif    LabelLevel.gif PrjLevel_4.gif
Fantastically easy and the perfect Halloween table centerpiece. Cathie and Steve made these deligtful Potion Bottles. This version is great for older kids, but could easily be adapted for smaller children-just use plastic juice bottles or other used containers.

Halloween Witch's Hat

IMG_5777.JPG
Four Crazy Kings
is one of my favorite crafty blogs and these witch's hats are
so adorable and fun. She uses paper plates as the base and paint and glitter.
These would work well with Extreme Glitter Paint, too.

Halloween Saftety Tips

Brush up on your Halloween safety! Here is a great resource for Halloween safety tips!

Halloween Safety Tips
Kids

  • Trick-or-Treaters
  • Carry a flashlight
  • Walk, don't run.
  • Stay on Sidewalks
  • Obey traffic signals
  • Stay in familiar neighborhoods
  • Don't cut across yards or driveways.
  • Wear a watch you can read in the dark.
  • Make sure costumes don't drag on the ground.
  • Shoes should fit (even if they don't go with your costume)
  • Avoid wearing masks while walking from house to house.
  • Carry only flexible knives, swords or other props.
  • (If no sidewalk) walk on the left side of the road facing traffic
  • Wear clothing with reflective markings or tape.
  • Approach only houses that are lit.
  • Stay away from and don't pet animals you don't know.

Parents

  • Make your child eat dinner before setting out.
  • Children should carry quarters so they can call home.
  • Ideally, young children of any age should be accompanied by an adult.
  • If your children go on their own, be sure they wear a watch, preferably one that can be read in the dark.
  • If you buy a costume, look for one made of flame-retardant material.
  • Older children should know where to reach you and when to be home.
  • You should know where they're going.
  • Although tampering is rare, tell children to bring the candy home to be inspected before consuming anything.
  • Look at the wrapping carefully and toss out anything that looks suspect.

Homeowners

  • Make sure your yard is clear of such things as ladders, hoses, dog leashes and flower pots that can trip the young ones.
  • Pets get frightened on Halloween. Put them up to protect them from cars or inadvertently bitting a trick-or-treater.
  • Battery powered jack o'lantern candles are preferable to a real flame.
  • If you do use candles, place the pumpkin well away from where trick-or-treaters will be walking or standing.
  • Make sure paper or cloth yard decorations won't be blown into a flaming candle.
  • Healthy food alternatives for trick-or-treaters include packages of low-fat crackers with cheese or peanut butter filling, single-serve boxes of cereal, packaged fruit rolls, mini boxes of raisins and single-serve packets of low-fat popcorn that can be microwaved later.
  • Non-food treats: plastic rings, pencils, stickers, erasers, coins.

Have an Eco-Friendly Halloween

Here are some great eco-friendly  Halloween ideas from The Adventurous Woman:

1. Find a costume exchange party. I’ve never done this - but it sounds like a blast! Some community centers, nonprofit organizations, or schools host Halloween costume exchange parties. Take all those old costumes and trade them with other people’s used costumes. It’s inexpensive, and a great way to make your Halloween costume eco-friendly.

2. Have fun with eco-friendly costumes. Dress up as a treehugger, Al Gore, a trendy cloth bag, a compact fluorescent light bulb, or Mother Earth. But don’t buy anything new - that doesn’t make for an eco-friendly Halloween - instead, look in second-hand stores, your friends’ and relatives’ closets, and your basement or attic for costume ideas.

3. Indulge with fair trade, organic chocolate. Many mainstream and health food stores sell eco-friendly bonbons made without preservatives or chemicals. In Canada, the TransFair logo certifies that cocoa products are directly traded, fairly-priced, environmentally-protected, and worker-friendly. Since giving away fair trade, organic chocolate to trick or treaters may be a little pricey, consider buying local candies.

Mod Podge Plate

LabelTime.gif PrjTime_3.gif    LabelLevel.gif PrjLevel_3.gif

Making a plate with decoupage is easy. All you need is tissue paper or gift wrap and Mod Podge. You can create very simple or uniquely complex designs with a little practice. Teens love to decoupage so this makes a great family or party project.
