Web Wednesday: Mod Podge Sparkler Safety Caddy for the Fourth of July

Happy 4th of July. The 4th is a great holiday to celebrate, it also one to take precautions on. One of the most popular yet dangerous 4th of July accessories are sparklers. Many children are attracted to these pretty accessories, but they also need to be cautious. Luckily we discovered this sparkler caddy on a craft blog called, Merriment Design. This is such a great idea, and one that should be around wherever there are kids and sparklers. This project was made using several mod podge products, including some new ones recently released and available at your local Michaels. To see all the supplies used, and for step-by-step instructions click here.

Tuesday Tutorial: Patriotic Bowl

With the 4th of July a day away it’s not too late to create some last minute patriotic decorations. Transform a clear plastic bowl into a designer chip bowl with 4th of July spirit. Not only is this bowl great for the 4th, use it at any of your summertime cookouts or parties. Cathie and Steve created this festive bowl, and you can too. This is such a simple project your kids can even help create this. See the complete tutorial below for how to make it.

PLAID Supplies

Monday Funday: Fourth of July Pot Hanger Decorations

By Candie Cooper - To see more from Candie visit her blog Candie Cooper's Journal

I've spent a good amount of time in the lawn and garden sections at retailers this year.  I love the cute whimsies to decorate your garden with.  One thing that especially caught my eye was the pot hangers from raccoons to frogs and gnomes.  Inspired, I created some special Independence Day decorations that can hang from flowerpots.

You will need:
Folk Art paint in red, white, and blue, silver Duck tape, acrylic gems, sparkly chenille stems, Mod Podge Hard Coat, paintbrushes, silver letter beads, desired wood shapes, paper and scissors.

Punch a hold in the wood shape with a drill or thumb tack.  Paint the shapes in blue and red and while the paint is still wet, brush white over tops in different designs (I used swirls and slashes).  Set aside to dry.  Use a contrasting color and the end of your paint brush to make dots around the edge of the shapes.

Put Duck tape on paper and cut out shapes to embellish the designs--a body for the butterfly, strips for the flower petals.  Use Mod Podge hard coat to attach them to the wood pieces.  You can also adhere the acrylic gems with the MP hard coat.  While those dry, spell out AMERICA or USA onto the chenille stems.

String the stem through the hole in the wood shape, folding in half and then folding the top half again to make the hook.  For the flower, I added an extra piece that twirled from the side with USA beads.

Have a very safe and happy holiday from us at Plaid!

Freelance Friday: Patriotic Planter

The 4th of the July is right around the corner, and it’s time to show off your patriotic spirit. Have your kids help create some patriotic decorations by making these planters. Very simple craft to make, all you will need are some plastic planters, stencils, and Apple Barrel paints. This project was originally found on the craft blog, The Domestic Diva. To see how it was made click here.

4th of July Magnets
By Candie Cooper

The 4th of July commemorates the birth of our nation. Show your patriotism and love with these shining star magnets.  Here's how to make them:

Base coat each of the stars with red, white and blue Apple Barrel paints.  You can paint the big star one color and the small star a contrasting color.

Sponge painting is a really easy way to add fun effects to your painting.  I cut up a sea sponge into small pieces (about the size of a golf ball).  Dip the sponge into paint and then blot it around on a scrap surface until most of the paint is removed.  Now it is ready to be dabbed on the star!

It's also fun to leave a few stars solid and paint them with red, turquoise, or hologram Extreme Glitter to add sparkle.

Seal each star with a coat of glossy Mod Podge.  This will make all your stars shiny and sealed.  You can also glue the little star on top of the big star with Mod Podge.

Embellish the stars with metallic pipe cleaners twirled into coils, ribbons, sequins and buttons.

Use a thick tacky glue to adhere the embellishments.  Use a weight, like the extreme glitter jar to hold the coils in place while the glue sets up.

Finish by gluing a magnet to the back of the star with the tacky glue, and perhaps adding the month and year with a  permanent marker.
