Freelance Friday: Colorful Yarn Stick Creations

One of the easiest and most colorful kids crafts I remember making, were these colorful yarn and stick creations. Don't you just love them! I mainly remember making these when I was in summer camp, and I'm sure there are several camps around the world making this craft. I stumbled across this revamped old school craft, on My Own Labels, and had to do a post on it. These colorful yarn creations can be revised, and designed to be incorporated into more personalized crafts. If you want to learn how to make this great kids' craft be sure to visit My Own Labels. Enjoy this fun summer craft!

Teaching Thursdays: Create This Playful Octopus

With summer here, I always love to go to beach every year. When I go to the beach I think of all the wonderful sea creatures that are apart of the ocean. One animal that has always been so fascinating to me is the, Octopus. This sea animal is amazing. Can you imagine having eight legs? I know at first it might be weird, but imagine how much more you could get done in the day. One of our very talented designers, Sherrie Ragsdale created this wonderful fun summertime craft. This cute octopus is sure to be a hit with the kids. This is a beginner level craft, and should take about 2 hours to complete. This would be great to make while at a summer camp. Enjoy!

Equipment Needed: Apple Barrel Paints - 20251 Pink Parfait, 20504 Black, 20503 White, Stencil Decor - 1533 Plaid 3/4" spouncer, 3/4" flat brush, Liner brush or Extra fine black permanent marker, Four pink 12" pipe cleaners, Goose egg, Eight 5/8" x 3/4" wooden spools, Sixteen 1/2" x 1/2" wooden spools, Sixteen 1/2" x 3/8" wooden spools, Forty 5/16" round beads, Glue, 3/8" black and white gingham ribbon, Pencil

Instructions:

1.  Paint all the wooden spools, egg and round bead without Pink Parfait, allow to dry.

2. Take the four pipe cleaners and twist them together in the middle. Add to each end of pipe cleaners, one 5/8" spool, bead, 1/2" x 1/2" spool, bead, 1/2" x 1/2" spool, bead, 1/2" x 3/8" spool, bead, 1/2" x 3/8" spool and finally the last bead. Curl up each end of pipe cleaners.

3.  Glue the egg to the center of legs.

4.  Add the eyes with the 3/4" spouncer dipped in White and then the Black center with the end of the spouncer dipped in black.

5.  Draw a smile on with the pencil and then go over with the liner brush or use a extra fine black permanent marker.

6. If you would like to dress up your octopus a little bit more, then try adding a little scrap of fabric to tie around his neck.

Together Tuesday -- Breezy Summer Pendant
by Candie Cooper

With the hot days of summer on our heels, my mind takes me back to swimming at Grandma's pool, Popsicles on the porch swing, hose fights with my sister (when we were really supposed to be washing the car), flip flops, lightning bugs, and trips to the lake.  My mom always had little craft projects for us to make with our friends on the front porch.  With that in mind, here is a quick and easy jewelry project that you can make together this summer.

Materials:
Mod Podge
Paint brush
Fabric scraps
Clear acrylic pendants
Large jump ring
Extra bead embellishments, head pins, jump rings (optional)
Ribbon or leather (20" for each necklace)
Scissors
Tapestry needle

Cut a piece of fabric slightly larger than your pendant.  I used 100% cotton because it's super flexible which formed around the pendant easily.

Paint a coat of Mod Podge on the back of the crystal and place fabric on top.  Roll the crystal on it's side to burnish the fabric in place.  Set aside to dry.

Trim excess fabric around the edge of the pendant.

Seal the fabric with 2 more coats of Mod Podge and leave to dry. (tip: you can use a hair dryer to speed the drying process a bit)

Use a tapestry needle to poke a hole through the fabric where it hangs from.  Beaded embellishments can be added as well with extra jump rings, bits of chain, etc...  (Another tip: Mis-matched earrings make great added dangles, too, because they are essentially pre-made.)  If you want more tips on how to make your own jewelry, check out my jewelry making video on PlaidOnline.

String the pendant onto a piece of leather, ribbon or cord of your choice.
Tie around your neck with a bow for summer fun style!

My Pet Rock

LabelTime.gif PrjTime_1.gif    LabelLevel.gif PrjLevel_4.gif

For whatever reason, my boys love collecting rocks. It isn't unusual for me to remove several of them from their pants when I'm about to do laundry, and if I'm not careful they occasionally will make it into the wash. I don't really no why they love rocks so much, but I do think this project is a great activity and a way to transform a picked-up rock into a true 'pet-rock'. This is a great activity for camp crafting, and fun to do with themes as well like animals, aliens and people. Enjoy!

Vacation Bible School

LabelTime.gif PrjTime_1.gif    LabelLevel.gif PrjLevel_4.gif

Hope everyone had a great 4th of July weekend! Here in Georgia, the summer is half way over because most schools start back in early August. July also starts the second round of summer camps as well as vacation bible school. I love this VBS project! The plaque is actually quite small so this would make a great group crafting activity.

Get Started with Summer Crafting

campcrafts.gif

Get Started with Summer Crafting! Here's some tips and ideas to getting your summer crafting off to a good start!

  1. Make sure you are stocked up on supplies! See this post.
  2. Plan weekly theme-based crafts related to your children’s interests. For smaller children, you may want to find simple themes like colors, shapes and letters. For older children, you can create craft units on nature, plants or local resources. Another idea is coming up with projects based on  summer plans you may have  like vacation or family reunion. Making scrapbooks, family trees, and destination maps are all ways to engage your children in arts and crafts.
  3. Create projects that use different mediums. You can try acrylic paints, fabric paints, paper crafting, decoupage and other mediums. Even try mimicking styles of great artists or art movements.
  4. Leave room for spontaneity.
  5. Incorporate nature and outdoors into your craft plans.
