Web Wednesday: New Year Snowman

By Candie Cooper (She more projects from Candie on her blog, Candie Cooper’s Journal)

Here's an idea for building a crafty snowman! This little guy was sold as a kit at the craft store. I changed it a bit to use some things from my stash.

You will need: Acrylic Folk Art paints, Mod Podge, dictionary paper, paint brushes, scissors, buttons, flat back crystals, ribbon, wire, white pom-poms or whatever embellishments you like.

Cut and tear dictionary paper to fit the snowman and use Mod Podge to attach. Dictionary paper is one of my favorite things to Mod Podge because it's so thin.

Use a foam brush to rub white Apple Barrel paint over the snowman. This technique tones down the dictionary paper. Optionally, you can paint the hat and arm areas with black and brown paint.

Martha Stewart glitter paint showed up great on the snowman's base because of it's larger flakes.

This is where your imagination can cut loose and the snowman come to life--sparkly eyes, a striped ribbon scarf, tinsel hat band and bird cut from the dictionary are a few ideas. You can also string some pom-poms on wire and fasten them to the arms. I used hot glue to secure the pieces in place.

As you can see, he fits right in with all the snow we've gotten the past few days. Wishing you a happy and crafty New Year!

**Please note, this is an indoor snowman. However, Plaid makes lots of fun outdoor formulas including Mod Podge and Folk Art brands.

Teaching Thursday: Slitherin' Friends

By Candie Cooper (See more from Candie on her blog, Candie Cooper's Journal)

With the weather getting chilly, these little guys are looking for a place to hide out! How about on your craft table under the work lamp?

I've looked at these reptile surfaces a thousand times in the wood section of the craft store. The cracks and crevices kept me away (and they were lizards and snakes after all). But! I know how much fun little boys and girls would have painting these creatures so I took stab (with a paint brush). Pick your favorite Apple Barrel and Folk Art paint colors and base coat, keeping a little water on your brush so the color seeps into the cracks.

Use a sponge to add a textured second color of green to the top or....

head outdoors to experiment painting with an old toothbrush. I flicked, brushed and splotched paint onto the lizard. It was messy, but so fun! Get really crazy and use a few colors.

The lizard came with a faux leather back piece, but I replaced it with colorful tie dyed felt. You can add more painted details and then outline them with a permanent marker so they show up.

The snake got more painted stripes and dots with a felt tongue. Thick craft glue was used to hold the felt embellishments. Snakes usually give me the "willies," but not this one! He's too cute.

Friends forever. I ended up loving this craft so much. Now, I've got my sights set on the plain wooden car surfaces with moving parts. Stay tuned.

*If you want your creatures to be shiny, use a spray varnish before adding felt embellishments.

Tuesday Tutorial: Halloween Tissue Box

Looking for a creative way to ad some scary decorations to your home? Try creating this fun Halloween Tissue Box. This project is perfect for kids to help create. Trenice Bishop designed this Halloween project. It was created using Apple Barrel paint, Mod Podge, and Dimensional Magic. This project will take about an hour to complete and will look perfect on an end table or coffee table.  Below are all the supplies and instructions needed to complete this project.

Plaid Supplies

Apple Barrel Acrylic Paint – 20589 Harvest Orange, Apple Barrel – 20662 Black, Mod Podge, Mod Podge Dimensional Magic – Silver

Other Supplies

Box of tissues, Chenille sticks (pipe cleaners), Pom Poms, Wiggly eyes, Craft brushes Water bowl

Instructions

1.    Paint the tissue box with Harvest Orange and let dry. (It may take several coats to cover any markings on the box.)

2.    Once dry, tape off the bottom of the box just along the edge of the folds on the either side.

3.    Paint below the tape using the Black paint. Let dry and remove the tape.

4.    Use a liner brush and Black paint to decorate the box with spider webs and small spiders.

To paint the webs:

Dip the end of your paintbrush in the Black paint. Make a dot on the box with the brush end.

Use the liner brush to paint a line going through the dot you just made (one vertical one horizontal).

Connect your lines at the ends creating four triangles.

Continue by extending the lines and connecting the ends.

Hang a spider from your web by making another dot with the brush end and painting small lines for spider legs.

5.    When the box is dry, seal the box with Mod Podge and let dry.

6.    For Pom-Pom Spiders:

Take the chenille sticks and bend them into small “V” shapes. Cut several pieces in various sizes for scarier legs.

Bend a small foot on the legs to make it easier to bond with hot glue.

Glue the legs down first and then add pom-pom spider bodies to cover hot glue.

Add wiggly eyes to complete spiders.

7. Trace over Spider webs with Silver Mod Podge Dimensional to make your webs pop.

Web Wednesday: How to Paint an Old Fashioned Cupcake Sign

I don't know about you, but I am looking forward to a change of the season. With fall coming sooner than later, I am looking forward to baking. For me baking is a seasonal activity. I don't do it much in the spring and summer months, but fall and winter months my kitchen smells of sugar and spice. Get your little ones in the mood by creating this adorable cupcake sign. After you make the sign, have your kids help you make some actual cupcakes. Molly from Just a Little Creativity created this sign using Apple Barrel and FolkArt paints. Tuesday Tutorial: Doodled Laptop Bag
By Candie Cooper - To see more from Candie visit her blog, Candie Cooper's Journal

Put your notebook, laptop or craft supplies in this awesome case! Here's what you need to make it:

Canvas pouch, Apple Barrel acrylic paint in desired colors or Folk Art fabric paint, Glo Away (glow in the dark paint), zebra Duck Tape sheets, scissors and a paint brush.

Add dashes with neon orange Apple Barrel paint around the pouch. This is so easy! What I love most is how the brush marks look on the textured canvas.

Cut strips of Duck Tape using the grid on the back to fit on the outer green pouch. You could also cut out a shape with scissors or even a die cut machine.

Since this surface isn't too paintable, the tape was a good solution. I love the patterns, but you could use solid tape too.

Add ribbon ties to the loops on the zipper for pull tabs. To keep the ribbon from fraying, apply a little Mod Podge to the edge.

For a little zing, outline some of the dashes in Glo Away to make you bag glow in the dark!

Ready for school, work, or even better---play!

Freelance Friday: Shine Sign

Home decor is typically one of those areas you do not have your kids help you with. While they always mean well their taste may not be the same as yours. The idea of having polka dotted walls is not exactly the look you are going for in your dinning room. However if your kids are insistent on helping decorate the home, here is a great project you can help them create. Cheri from I Am Momma Hear Me Roar created this Shine Sign. This is such a simple project to make, even though it looks intricate Cheri made this sign with all supplies she found at her local Walmart. Cheri used Apple Barrel paint, Mod Podge, and strips of fabric. This is a great project to make this weekend with your kids. Let their inner decorator come out, and get creative. Click here to see how Cheri made this sign.

Freelance Friday: Hand Painted Geo Blocks

Happy Friday crafters! The weekend is here, and not just any weekend but a glorious three-day weekend. I am so excited! There are so many projects I want to work on, including this one I recently discovered. What do you think of these hand painted geo blocks? Aren't they neat? I discovered these over on the blog, Honest to Nod. While the concept is not a new one, it is a project that allows you to get very creative. The paint used was Apple Barrel, and you can choose a unique color palette to create a fantastic pattern. This project is great to do one afternoon this weekend. It will take sometime to create, but just put on some tunes, or a marathon of your favorite t.v. show. Click here to learn how to create these geo blocks.

Web Wednesday: Superhero Pegs

All the creative and talented crafters I find on the Internet never surprise me. So many projects grab my attention, and I stare at them in awe. That's exactly what I did when I saw this project. These Avenger Superhero Pegs are so awesome, and a wonderful project to make. Kim from A Girl and a Glue Gun created these pegs. She claims she got the idea after seeing the movie. Pegs are a very interesting surface to craft on, and I have been seeing more and more people post pictures of pegs on Pinterest. Kim used Apple Barrel paints, and to see her step-by-step instructions click here. This is a great craft project for kids to help with. They will love creating their favorite superhero.

Tuesday Kid's Talk: A Useful and Cheap Mother's Day Gift

Kid's love to create all kinds of things, but they especially love to create something they can give as a gift. With Mother's Day quickly approaching parents and teachers may be looking for a craft kids can create to give to their Moms. Try this painted flowerpot. This pot is very simple to make, and the supplies needed are very affordable. You will need a clay pot, Apple Barrel paints, and FolkArt paints. All these paints are kid friendly, and non-toxic. Web Wednesday: Second Grade Artwork

One of the reasons I love working at Plaid is because I get to be around so many creative people. There is always someone here creating arts and craft projects. Recently one of my co-workers, Maria, showed me this adorable canvas artwork. Every year her kid's school does a school auction, and this is one of the projects that will be apart of it. All proceeds from the school auction go to help fund the school's art department. This project is so creative and different. She created this using Apple Barrel gloss paint in Black, Mod Podge, scrapbook paper, FolkArt paint in Fresh Foliage & Yellow Light, and buttons. Have you ever helped create a piece for an art auction?

Teaching Thursdays: Sweet Heart Valentine's Art

By: Candie Cooper (To see more of Candie's work visit her blog, Candie Cooper's Journal)

Valentine's Day is about a month away!  This is a project especially geared for little ones, but I had a ton of fun making it so let's just say it's for kids of all ages. ;)  It's carefree and fun, no skills required.  Do you like it already?

You will need:  Apple Barrel paints in pink, light pink and purple, pink Martha Stewart glitter paint, paint brushes, a canvas in desired size, Mod Podge, and paper doily hearts.  You will also need a frame to fit your canvas.

Base-coat the canvas in desired color and then while it's still wet, let your child do the painting with a lighter color (i.e. dark pink and light pink).  I channeled my inner 3 year old here.

As the layer's dry, you can add the purple.  Here's where you have to be careful, because if you put the purple on, while the pink is still wet, you may get a "muddy" look.  You know the one.  I plugged in a hairdryer next to where I was working to quickly dry the colors.

Add a touch of sparkle with Martha's glitter paint.  This stuff is so fun!  Look at what it does to the surface in the next photo!

Just the right touch!  It is shiny when it dries, but don't worry because the Mod Podge in gloss will make everything shiny.

Lay the paper hearts however you wish on the canvas.  Here's one idea I thought about.  You can also use big paper hearts!

Use Mod Podge to adhere the hearts to the canvas.  Have you tried the Mod Podge brayer?  It smooths out all the air bubbles and wrinkles.  Very handy!

Optionally, you can use a paint marker to add initials, date, or sentiment.  Artists of all ages can sign their work, right?!

You can leave it like this or paint a frame to match.

Ta daaaa!  Sweet Heart Valentine's Art!

Get your own Mod Podge Brayer right here:  http://www.createforless.com/Plaid+Mod+Podge+Tools+Brayer/Squeegee/pid173914.aspx

Web Wednesday: Garland of Hearts

Now I know it is only January, but Valentine's Day will be here before you know it. There are so many great kid friendly crafts to make for Valentine's Day, just like this Garland of Hearts project. One of the best surfaces to have kids craft on is styrofoam. A great paint for kids to use when crafting with styrofoam is, Apple Barrel. This is such an easy to create project that the kids will be happy to make. Aside from styrofoam, and Apple Barrel paint you will need a few more supplies. This craft was designed by, Margaret Riley. Freelance Friday: New Year's Eve Ball
By: Candie Cooper - To see more crafts from Candie, check out Candie Cooper's Journal.

2012 is almost here! I can't believe it either! Like many of us, I grew up watching Dick Clark celebrate in Times Square (rarely awake to actually see the ball drop though). This New Year, you and your kids can bring the famous Times Square tradition to your home with this easy project.

You'll need a foam disc in desired size, paint and a stiff brush. You can use any color of Folk Art or Apple Barrel paint you like.  I opted for classic Apple Barrel White in Gloss. I've mentioned this before, but Apple Barrel rocks for painting foam surfaces!

I like to squirt out a spiral of paint directly onto the styrofoam and then dip my brush in water while spreading the paint around. The water helps the paint to seep into the foam pores even more, creating a nice coat.

Fiskars and Martha Stewart punches are handy to create polka dots and snowflakes on the ball. I used old wrapping paper and scrapbook paper in layers. Tiny mirrors and crystals can be added for sparkle.

Use Mod Podge to glue the layers together. To glue the final pieces onto the foam, use cool temp hot glue. Also if you look just next to the Mod Podge, I hot glued a hook into the foam so it can hang.

Find some sparkly ribbon and tie it to the hook and hang it up! You could also set it in a book shelf if you've no great places to hang it.

I added a little bauble above it from the dollar store just for fun. Stay tuned for another fun project to light your New Year's Ball up! And just for fun, here's an article about the history of the New Year's Ball via TIME:

Monday Funday: Fall Wreath
By: Candie Cooper

Hello, whoooo's there?!? How about letting this little owl greet visitors at the door for this Thanksgiving?

You will need: paint brushes, Red Folk Art paint, Green Apple Barrel Paint, foam wreath, silk leaves pack, Extreme Glitter in autumn colors, Mod Podge, wood letters and owl, thick glue or glue gun.

Paint the letters red and seal with a coat of Mod Podge. I put the letters on plastic so they don't stick to the paper when dry.

The dollar store is a great place to get packs of silk leaves. Paint a coat of Extreme glitter on each leaf. Don't worry, the glitter will dry clear and sparkly.

Paint the foam wreath with Apple Barrel paint. Apple Barrel is awesome because it's a thinner paint base so it runs into the pores of the foam.

Glue the leaves around the wreath, followed by owl and F A L L letters. If you use thick glue, you may want some pins to hold the leaves in place while they dry.

How sweet is that? You can find the owl and letters in the wood crafts and surfaces section of the craft store. Happy remaining days of Fall!

Teaching Thursdays: Halloween (or any holiday!) Necklaces
By:Candie Cooper - To see more crafts by Candie, please visit her blog, Candie Cooper's Journal.

Reversible domino necklaces can be whipped up for any holiday!  You'll need Mod Podge, Mod Podge Dimensional Magic, dominos, Apple Barrel paint in Limeade, card stock, paint brush, scrapbook paper scraps, embellishments, spider paper punch, cobweb rubber stamp, black permanent ink pad, eye screws, Dremel tool with small drill bit, ribbon or elastic, beads and mult-purpose adhesive...

Swipe some paint onto white card stock a paint brush and leave to dry.

I found this cobweb stamp and hole punch for $1 each at the super-store!  Great craft "staples."  Use a permanent ink pad to stamp cobwebs onto the green painted section.

Punch out as many spiders as you like from purple or blue scrapbook paper.

Cut the cobwebs to fit the back of the dominos and Mod Podge to the back side.  Repeat to attach the spiders.

Apply a coat of Mod Podge Dimensional Magic on top of the cobweb paper and leave to dry.  Be sure not to shake the DM before applying.

These super cute brads were $1 also!  Use wire cutters to remove the brads and glue on the front of the domino.

Use a tiny drill bit and Dremel tool to drill a hole in the top middle of the domino.

Twist the eye screw into the hole.  If the hole is a little larger than the screw, you can apply a dot of glue and push in the hole (this has happened to me if you can't tell).

Look at this perfect orange and black cord you can find in the ribbon section of the craft store!

String the domino alone on the ribbon or along with beads on black elastic.  Knot the ends and slip over your head!  Trick or treat either way!
